How to use

Find the reason for a wrong-size SVG

1

Read the declared units

Upload the file to see what its width and height mean in millimetres, inches and 96-DPI pixels.

2

Compare with your intent

Compare the result with the size of the finished object, sheet or working area you actually need.

3

Save a safe copy

Download a separate SVG with the intended physical size, then check the import in the production application.

Before you change a file

Units, pixels and viewBox are different things

  1. Width and height declare the physical presentation size of an SVG.
  2. The viewBox defines the internal drawing coordinate system and is often essential for predictable scaling.
  3. Pixels in SVG use a conventional conversion; they are not a reliable physical unit until the import software interprets them.
  4. Changing only physical dimensions can scale a design without changing its internal paths, which is helpful but should always be verified after import.

Questions and answers

Before you export

Why does the same SVG open at different sizes?

Apps can interpret missing units, pixels, a viewBox or import preferences differently. Checking the declared physical dimensions helps identify the common cause.

Does this convert the artwork to millimetres?

It creates a copy with width and height declared in millimetres. It deliberately keeps the drawing and viewBox untouched to avoid changing the artwork unexpectedly.

Will it fix every import problem?

No. Complex transforms, strokes, clipping paths and software import rules can still affect a file. Always check the final size in the app used for production.
