Questions, answered
Why can't I just engrave the photo as-is?
Lasers can only burn or not burn a spot — dithering simulates shades of gray using patterns of tiny dots, which is what makes a photo engraving look realistic.
Which dithering style is best?
It depends on the material — the tool lets you compare Floyd-Steinberg, Atkinson, and Bayer patterns live before downloading.
Does this remove the background for me?
Not yet — for best results, start with a photo that already has a clean, simple background.
My engraving still looks off even after using this — what else could it be?
Once the image itself is properly dithered, remaining issues are usually about your machine's physical settings (focus distance, power/speed for your specific material) rather than the file.
Can I use this on images with text in them?
Yes, but very small or thin text can suffer the same "too fine to resolve" issue as thin vector lines — larger, bolder text engraves more reliably.
